Introduction
The comments section is a war zone. "RED color science is unmatched!" "Sony autofocus is king!" At Shot By Mayhem, we shoot with everything from Arri Alexa to iPhones. Here is the truth: The camera doesn't matter if you can't light.
But if you can light, here is which body you should rent.
The Solo Operator King: Sony FX3 (or A7SIII)
In 2025, the FX3 is effectively the industry standard for run-and-gun music videos.
- The Superpower: ISO 12,800. You can shoot in a dimly lit alleyway and it looks like a movie.
- The Autofocus: Sony’s AF is so good it feels like cheating. For gimbal work or chaotic performance shots, it hits focus 99% of the time.
- The Workflow: File sizes image: '/images/portfolio-private-jet.png'e looks great out of the box.
The Cinematic Flex: RED Komodo (X)
If you have a crew (at least a Focus Puller and a Gaffer), the RED is a beast.
- The Look: The Global Shutter means no "jello effect" when you whip pan. The highlights roll off smoothly, giving that "money" look.
- The Trap: RED requires light. Lots of it. If you underexpose a RED sensor, the shadows get noisy fast. Do not bring this to a dark club shoot unless you are bringing big lights.
- The Cost: The body is cheap, but the batteries, cards, and rigging will double the price.
The Verdict
- Choose Sony FX3 if: You are a 1-man band, you shoot in natural/low light, or you need to move fast.
- Choose RED Komodo if: You have a lighting budget, a crew, and you want to impress the client with a "Hollywood" looking rig.
Mayhem Rule: "I would rather shoot on an iPhone with great lighting than a RED in the dark."
